License Installation 20 Years, 5 Months ago
I registered Absolute Telnet and received the license by e-mail. I cannot get the license to install in the program. I have tried to associate the license with the program and have been asked for a password and user name. The ones I have do not work. I also clicked on the file when it first was downloaded snd associated with WinZip. This unpacked a single file with a number display and my name at the end. This also did not associate with the program. I finally downloaded a decoding program. When I tried this, the prompt said there was nothing to decode. I am now at the end of the line and have no answers. Can anyone help?

Are you an AOL user? Some AOL users have reported problems with the e-mail client corrupting the license key.

Just got my license as well and I'm wondering what is the procedure to install the license. Clicking on it doesn't install it. I also tried the association trick with the executible. My system is defaulting to assigning it to Visual Studio .Net so that may be some of the issue. Any ideas?

Save the license to disk and try the following at the command line:

start absolutetelnet.exe license.trg

where license.trg is the name of the license file in the current directory.

A followup here.... Sometimes e-mail programs will munge the license file. AOL e-mail is the worst at this. The format of the file, however, can be fixed by editing it with notepad. The first line of the file should be a string of numbers and letters. The second line will be your name as you registered on the website.

After you edit the file, save it back as license.trg and try the step I mentioned in my previous post.

The next version of Absolute will contain a method to manually enter these key values into the program. The concept of the '.trg' file was to make it easy for users to apply the license without having to type a long license code into the program. And, while it works for most people, it makes it much harder for others. The next version will allow manual entry, while retaining the '.trg' file method when it works.

Brian,
Thanks for your help. As soon as I found it was the e-mail program causing the problem, I registered with Yahoo for a free e-mail account and downloaded it through their service. I also changed my profile with Celestial to reflect the change. As soon as the download came through, I clicked on it and it self installed. This solved the problem.

THANKS
