I am trying to do a zmodem download over telnet and when i initiate the transfer the telnet session is terminated. Are you operating the telnet client in 7 or 8 bit mode? is this selectable?

The telnet connection switches to binary right before the file transfer begins.
What type of host are you downloading from?
