I am currently testing out the 2.11 trial and it had been performing superbly until I SSH'd into two of my Red Hat 8.0 machines and then characters started getting garbled beyond recognition. This happens particularly in man pages and in any of the Red Hat menu-based commands. The display output from all of my other boxes looks great (RH7.3, RH7.1, SCO5.5) so my first thought was that my man pages were actually garbled but I checked a second server which had the same problem then checked them both via their consoles which appear normal.

I have tried all of the different terminal types and fonts to no avail. Here's part of 'man tar' output, for example:

SYNOPSIS

I don't know if this is a configuration problem on my end or what but I'd love to get it cleared up so I can pry the $30 out of my boss' wallet.

This has been up before on the board. The short answer is that it is due to the introduction of UNICODE in RH 8.0 and there are problem with the current fonts to correctly render the *huge* amount of characters in UNICODE. The change is that the LANG environment variable is set to en_US.UTF-8 in RH 8.0 whereas it was en_US in RH 7.x. (This also causes problems for some programs, like mrtg and ht://dig's ability to index PDF-files.) Starting your session with the command "export LANG=en_US" will do the trick.
I am using "Anadale Mono" and it draws *most* characters correctly, but sometimes I set LANG=en_US.

Woodsmt,

The default character encoding under Redhat 8 is UTF-8. That means that UNICODE characters may be encoded into a string of multiple characters for transmission to the client.

The characters that are most affected in US-English systems are the line-draw characters and hyphen characters. That is why screen oriented apps and man pages are adversely affected.

To compensate, the client must understand and decode UTF-8 data into the proper UNICODE characters on the client system and an appropriate font must be selected. In AbsoluteTelnet 2.11, you can make these choices on the Options->Properties->Appearance tab by choosing the UTF-8 character translation and choosing a good font like 'Courier New' or 'Lucida Console'.

There *may* still be issues in AbsoluteTelnet 2.11 with the display of hyphen characters. A Unicode 'hyphen' is a different character from an ASCII minus '-', and most US English fonts do not include one. AbsoluteTelnet 2.12 beta addresses this by displaying a minus in place of a hyphen.

You can download the new beta here if you wish:

Thanks guys. I really appreciate your help and it's looking a lot better. Knowing that you are working on it helps too - we'll be purchasing a copy this morning.

Thanks!

BTW,

The *latest* beta (2.12 RC12) includes a UTF-8 detection routine to suggest UTF-8 decoding to the user when UTF-8 data is detected and the proper translation mode is not enabled.

Hopefully this will make life simpler for those who are migrating to RedHat 8!!

Give it a shot!

FYI:
The RC12 version is working just fine and the UTF-8 detection seems to do the trick. The man-pages now look beutiful.
