Brian,
Using version 5.44 the 3D effect on the tab seems not to be working properly. It is very difficult from looking just at the tabs to know which tab is in focus. I don't remember having that issue on the older version. Also, I am using Vista, so this may be a Vista issue.
So my suggestion is to change the tab display somehow to make it more obvious which tab is in focus.

The tabs take their appearance from the current Windows theme. On XP, with the default XP theme, the selected tab has a orange highlight to it. Try some different themes in Vista to find the one you like.
