We have an alcatel speedtouch pro adsl modem which we use as our internet conection. I would like to gain access through the internet to one of our machines which has a static ip address.
Unfortunately, our ISP only provides us with a dynamic IP address.
I can get the outside IP address of our modem and want to use no-ip.com to access the machine using their dynamic IP client software, but it still does'nt work.
Can I use Absolute Telnet port forwarding to solve this problem and if so how?

I assume you're trying to establish a method of connecting back into your network from the outside. AbsoluteTelnet cannot help you unless you are able to determine the IP address in some way.

I use no-ip at home myself. However, I use it with the Linux client, so the prodecure for setup on Windows may be a little different. You must install and configure the no-ip client software at home so that if your dynamic IP address changes, the IP address can be re-broadcast to the outside world. You can then reference your IP address as something like 'myaddress.noip.com' or however you set it up at noip.com. Care must be taken, though, that the noip client picks up your external internet address and not the internal address of your PC, which may be different.

Once into the network, you could use AbsoluteTelnet and SSH port forwarding to access various other machines on your network, but that would require setting up an SSH server (AbsoluteTelnet is SSH client software only). Most Linux distributions come with SSH server software built in. Some add-on software can be purchased for Windows (www.bitvise.com).

Does this help?

Hi Brian
Thanks for the reply.
Our modem has an internal IP of 192.168.X.X
and using a piece of software called Auto Port Mapping I have been able to determine that it's outside address is 82.194.X.X
Any idea how I can determine my external IP address?

Your external address should be the 84.194.X.X address. However, you need to run the no-ip client software on some PC on the DSL side to communicate that address back to the no-ip servers. From there, they will associate your name (whatever name you registered with no-ip) with the IP address you got from your DSL provider.

Whenever the address changes, it will be re-sent to no-ip to be reassociated with your chosen name.
