Feature Request: Selected url to default browser 18 Years, 4 Months ago
|
|
As in CRT and SecureCRT, the ability to select a text url on the main telnet screen, right click, and chose 'go to url' at which point your default browser receives the url and loads it in a new page. The default browser is loaded when necessary.
I find this feature very useful when in Usenet where urls are often given for reference. Select, rightclick, select option and boom, you're there. Much less time-consuming and awkward than selecting, copying, then finding your browser to bring it to the front, click to focus on address bar, and paste, then hit go to return.
Hope this feature request meets with joy. Thank you. Nex

Alan,
I've implemented this in the latest beta and I wanted you to give it a shot. Let me know what you think.

It works! Default browser's loaded if needed, requested url is loaded into a new page thereby not disturbing any other open tabs (I use Opera), and the process is quick and painless.
Thank you Very Much, Brian. Nex

Thanks for checking, Alan!
Keep using it for awhile and let me know if there's anything quirky in the implementation.

AOK after several sessions of use. I'd say the 'Go to URL feature is ready for prime time. Nex

Thanks, Alan.
The current beta is in active review. I've released it to my 100+ beta testers and so far, things look pretty good. If you'd like to follow the progress, join the group here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/celestial_beta
I've got one thing to fix and another beta will be going out tonight.

First: I love Absolute Telnet, I use it all day every day.
OK Then! Back in 2005, selecting a URL and being able to open it was pretty cool. But now, if I may be so bold, I shall ask for even more.
Just like modern email programs (gmail, outlook) and instant messaging programs (AIM, et al), it would be most excellent if the telnet program automatically parsed URL's and made them hot-clickable. This would be *especially* nice for long urls that span multiple lines of the terminal!
Often, it's difficult to select exactly the right part of the screen for the URL. Sometimes you get a stray (CR/LF) at the beginning, or a trailing period at the end. Automatic hot-spotting of URL's by the terminal would be awesome.

Hi,
Can i put a request in for this as well, as it definently makes opening url's much easier, also the same would be good for email addresses if you can do it?
Regards

Sounds nice and I'd like that too, but I can't see how it could be done. Telnet by its very nature is *text*.
Wait, I suppose it might be done in some fancy text terminal protocol - in fact clickable items already exist in some - but then we'd have to config AT to use that terminal prot specifically. One of the ansis? Dunno. Course the other side would need to do it too.
Unless there's a way to do a routine where word delimiters, spaces, are recognized? At that point the prg could do what it wanted with the string. Brian? Nex

Doesn't require anything fancy, just a parser to automatically scan the input for things that look like URLs. Highlight them and make them clickable. Clicking them launches a browser to actually display the page.
If someone wants to provide source code (c or C++) for a URL parser, I'd be glad to take a look and see what it would require to add to Absolute. You might want to start here:
