TOPIC: XModem differs from Hyperterminal
#2014
XModem differs from Hyperterminal 17 Years, 10 Months ago
I try to use Absolute Telnet to
replace Hyper Terminal. The first
problem I encounter is that the XModem
file trasfer terminates:

vivi> load flash kernel x
Ready for downloading using xmodem...
Waiting...
Failed downloading file
vivi>

Please help!

Jim,

Are you sending a file the host or receiving a file from the host?

What type of host is it?

With xmodem, you have to start the transfer from both ends. On the server, you issue the command at the command line as you did. From Absolute, though, you have to start the transfer as well (Transfer->Send->Xmodem or Transfer->Receive->Xmodem)

Re: XModem differs from Hyperterminal 17 Years, 10 Months ago
Dear Brian:

I am receiving a file from PC, my serial
port is connected to an ARM training board.

When I use Hyper Term, I type in the serial
port the receiving commands, then I go to
menu bar and select transfer file XModem.
PC and my ARM board then exchange headers
and begin the file transfer.

When I use the Absolute telnet, I use the
exact same procedure, but the serial terminal
side breaks right away. I noticed that
there is a garage character in front of
the breaking message.

My questions are:
1) The prefix sending string in Absolute
telnet for XModem, is it standard?
2) If not, what should I change it to?

I don't think start PC send file first
is the solution, because the command
line interpreter of my ARM board will
receiving all the hand shaking headers
and start beeping.

Any othe thoughts are greatly appreciate.
Many thanks for the helps!

Best regards,

In Hyperterminal, are you using standard xmodem or '1k xmodem' ??

And another question... Can you give my a logfile of the session?

Use File->Open LOG at the beginning of the session
Use File->Close log after xmodem fails
zip the file and email it to me.

Thanks,

Brian

I had similar problem but in the other direction using 6.0.1. Tried half a dozen times to send (to cisco router) using both xmodem types and always failed. Eventually I gave up and used hyperterm. Sorry I don't have the logs but just to let you know its not necessarily an isolated incident.

I am running Vista Home Premium with a USB serial port emulator on my laptop so I figured its not a particularly common configuration at the moment.

Cheers

If someone could give me access to an environment where this is happening, that would be great! I've made some xmodem modifications since this problem originated, but have not had anyone followup on the results.

Contact me if you are interested in following this down further.

Brian, I to have this problem. I am using xmodem to transfer a new IOS to a Cisco router. I have tried many different router models, 1721,1750,1720 and 2500. Each time I start the transfer on the router and then from Absolute Telnet. Then the application becomes unresponsive and Windows Vista closes it down. I can do the same procedure using HyperTerm and it will work fine. I can create a log of the session for you if you need it.

There was an xmodem fix in 6.04 that I think may help you. If you want to try the absolute latest, you'll want to grab 6.11.

http://www.celestialsoftware.net/telnet/AbsoluteTelnet6.11.exe

Let me know how it goes!

Re: XModem differs from Hyperterminal 16 Years, 2 Months ago
Ok I uninstalled the old version and installed the new version. My trial period of 30 dya expired 3 days ago. However you can push F(random button) and get 30 more days, which I need to verify the xmodem transfer works. When I start the app now I get the screen to push F(random number) and whne I do it goes away and nothing happens. :-( Any thoughts? Thanks for the help Brian.
