Bell configuration 17 Years, 3 Months ago
Hi, this has come up a couple of times before, but not in quite a while, from what I can tell.

I'd like more control over how the bell is handled. With multiple tabs open to the same server, I often start up a command and then switch to another tab and want to be notified when the command has finished. The way I do this is to tell the shell to echo the ^G character when the command is finished.

I'd like at least the ability to configure which sound is played, so I can pick one that's a bit louder, and sounds the way I want it to.

Another option might be to have some sort of visual indication that works across all tabs. So maybe flash the whole window in the active tab whenever the bell sound is played in any tab. Or possibly the way Windows XP handles the taskbar: flash the tab (the top part that you click to select it) once a second until that tab is selected again. And if the whole Absolute app is minimized, restore it and bring it to the front when any tab plays the bell.

I'm a long-time putty user, and I've gotten just about everything else configured the way I need it in Absolute, but I find this one feature has a lot of possibilities for improvement.

Thanks,
Russell

There does seem to be some room for improvement, especially with bells coming from tabbed sessions. Probably flashing the tab or some kind of visual identification will suffice.

I'm glad to hear from an ex-putty user! What is it about AbsoluteTelnet that made you switch?

Good to hear.

What is it about AbsoluteTelnet that made you switch? The tabbed interface, definitely. I typically have 8 tabs open at once, across 3 servers, and I got tired of having to switch between putty windows.

While we're on the subject of tabs, one other feature suggestion I could make would be to emulate the Firefox extension "Focus Last Selected Tab". When you're flipping back and forth between two tabs, it's very handy to be able to just keep clicking the same tab and have it alternate back and forth with the previous tab. So in other words, click tab 1, click tab 2, click tab 2 again and it goes back to tab 1, click tab 2 again and it goes back to tab 2, etc. It's also great when you just want to check the status of something going on in another tab, and then switch right back. Two clicks to the other tab and you're back.
