Registration Error Message. 18 Years, 4 Months ago
We have version 2.0 Some of our users receive the following:
"The registry information for this application is missing, or has been corrupted or altered. The application will now halt".
Any ideas..?

Thank you in advance for any help.

2.0? Really? That's pretty old. I've actually had a couple users of 2.13 report this error, but have yet to discover the root cause. A lot of stuff has been fixed since the 2.X line.

So, more than one user is experiencing this?

Have you installed any new software lately, or windows service packs?

Try reinstalling. If that doesn't work, download the latest version from the website. You can at least run it in the 30-day trial mode to see if the problem goes away.

Re: Registration Error Message. 18 Years, 4 Months ago
Starting this morning I have the same problem, with version 2.13. I didn't install any software or service packs on this system lately (Windows XP SP 2).

After uninstall and install I was able to use the program one time, although it gave some error messages about the license. But after that the program no longer starts, only the errormessage about the registry is displayed.

Next I installed version 3.80 that I am using on another system, and that version seems to work without problems.

I'm glad to hear the problem is gone. Are you able to try any other versions to pinpoint where the error might have been resolved?

I am still unable to reproduce this.

Yes it is old. But up to now it worked fine. After re-installing it. The users were fine. I'd have to ask our engineers if there were changes made in our system.
Thanks for you reply.

We started getting that same error message here at Boys Town this week. We have version 2.12. Four systems out of six have now had the error this week. Reinstalling, or even uninstalling, cleaning out the registry, and reinstalling, allows you to run it once before you get the error again.

Same problem here with version 2.12. If I install a newer version, do I need to purchase the license again? The problem seems to exist for versions 2.x. Any chance of fixing this and give us a patch to solve the problem rather than have us download a newer version? Thanks.

Re: Registration Error Message. 18 Years, 4 Months ago
It would be too difficult to patch 2.13. Most of the core code is under source control, but I wouldn't be able to completely rebuild a 2.13 build environment, including 3rd party libraries, packages, installers, etc... I'm afraid I'd create more problems than I'd fix.

If you don't want to bother with the newest version, you might try going to 3.00 or 3.13. There may be a way to upgrade your 2.13 license without having to buy anything else.

Follow these steps:

1. First, you must remember or find somewhere the original email address you used when you made your purchase.

2. Go to the Celestial Software website and click the 'purchase now' button on the nav pane

3. Click the 'upgrade now' option

4. It will tell you you're not logged in and give you the option to login or register. Choose 'Register'.

5. Click 'Agree'

6. Fill out the registration form, but be sure to use the email address from your original purchase. Don't worry, you'll have the opportunity to change it later if it's not still a valid email address. The email address is used to lookup the info about your original purchase.

7. Submit the registration form.

8. Upon successful registration, click the 'my account' link on the nav pane at the left. You should see your purchase information.

9. If necessary choose the 'my profile' option to change your email address to something more current

10. On the 'my account' page, click 'email my license' to have the license sent to your email address.

This process updates your license to one that can be used within the 3.XX product. Once you get the license in the email, you can go to Help->Enter license key in the program and enter the key. The one important thing to remember is to *remove* the dashes in the license key when you enter it. It was necessary to add the dashes to the key to avoid the license email being identified as spam. Version 4.XX automatically strips the dashes. In earlier versions, you'll have to do it yourself.

Also, there is still the 1 year limit on free upgrades. Since version 3.00 came out on jan 1, 2004, you must have purchased your license after jan 1, 2003 in order for this procedure to work. If you are unsure when you purchased your license, complete steps 1-8 above. When you're at the 'my account' page, it will tell you when you purchased. It will also provide a link for a discounted upgrade if you want to go straight to 4.01.

Wow! That was a mouthfull!

Okay thanks fema/Brian. I'll need to look up what info I used when I bought it. So where can I download the 3.x exe? If I want version 3.50, where can I download this exe? This site only offers 4.01 now, right? Thanks for your help again.

Forgot to ask do you why all of a sudden the application stops working for versions 2.x? At first I thought it was just me, but coming here and seeing a couple others are also having the same problem makes wonder why it just stops working. The only thing(s) I've installed in the past couple of days was Windows Updates, but the app was still working up until today, after I installed the Updates (I use it everyday).

Sorry about the 'fema' thing. I created a new account to test the re-license steps I mentioned above.

To download 3.00, grab this link:

http://www.celestialsoftware.net/telnet/AbsoluteTelnet3.00.exe

You can substitute any version number for the 3.00 in the above link. Check out the 'version history' link at the left for release dates to see which one you can use with your existing license.

I'm not sure why 2.13 is doing this. But, I've had reports that going to at least 3.00 takes care of the problem.

Just wanted to add to this list.
We have 10 users. I think like 8 out of ten have gotten this error so far.
This must be some kind of date related thing.
We have been using version 2.12
It was working fine up till this error.
I think it all started on the 16th.

uninstalling and reinstalling works. But, the error returns.

It sounds date related. Or at least related to something date related.

I'd like to hear from everyone in this post with the following info:

1. When did you first notice the problem?
2. What version of Windows are you using?
3. What version of Absolute are you using?
4. Have you recently installed any Windows updates or other software packages?
5. Was Absolute running when these packages were installed?

If your purchase date allows, try updating to at least version 3.00. 3.00 and above don't seem to have this problem at all. At least none reported.

For us, it started on Nov.15th. So far after re-installing 2.0, no problems.
Windows XP
Absolute version 2.0
Will get back to you on the last two questions...

Thanks...

1. When did you first notice the problem?
-Tuesday, Nov. 15
2. What version of Windows are you using?
-Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2000 SP4
3. What version of Absolute are you using?
-Version 2.12
4. Have you recently installed any Windows updates or other software packages?
-Yes, they happen automatically, and the last one on my system was Monday, Nov. 14. I uninstalled it but the problem persisted. The problem has gone away on 4 of the 5 systems after multiple reinstall attempts, but I don't know why.
5. Was Absolute running when these packages were installed?
-Some systems probably yes, some no.

I cannot try 3.x because of purchase date. I also cannot get my license to show up online.

Thanks,

Yes, I remember now that you say that, John Fuller ended up purchasing the license.

On the 5th system that had this problem, I just upgraded it to 2.13 and the problem went away. Again, the problem has gone away on the other 4 systems and they are 2.12, and I'm not sure why it went away. I did notice on the other systems that during the installation that happened to fix the problem, the install program said that it was replacing an older version, even though it was going from 2.12 to 2.12. When the installation did not fix the problem, it didn't give that message.

Our users have desktop/laptops with Windows XP Professional, version 2002 with SP1

Can we also upgrade to 3.0 from our current 2.0...?? Would there be a cost associated with this upgrade...?

Thanks ..

I have the same problem: Yesterday I could work with the software (I think it was version 2.13), but when I tried to open a new window I suddenly got the registry-missing message. Now it don`t likes to work anymore.

I have bought the license in October 2001 - so my license doesn't work with version 3...

Also version 3 is not able to handle my key with passphrase (this worked in version 2 and seems to be fixed in 3.11)

So I think I have two possibilites: Update to version 4 for about 19.95 (how long will this version work?) or use another software :-(

Or do you have another idea?

I'm also having this problem, and 2.13 is the last version I'm allowed to use. I don't think your procedure to update the license will work, because my license is old.

The problem seems to be either date related, or related to some phone-home property that your software may have.

I had this problem earlier when this message was posted, but assumed it was something else causing problems.. Now, today, the same thing happens again.

Reinstalling the software seems to fix it but this is quite far from an acceptable solution, considering this behaviour is new.

Running Absolute Telnet 2.13, Win XP SP2 + all patches. No idea if Abs Telnet was up while patched. I would say I first noticed this, maybe, months ago.

Is there any news on a solution?

My best guess, given how many customers are experiencing this is that some windows update is interfering. Some have reported that reinstalling 2.13 fixes the problem, while others have it reoccur even after reinstalling. The only thing that seems to work is to upgrade to at least 3.0.

I am having this same issue (suddenly) on one laptop. The other is not experiencing any issues. You get the same 'Registry' error as described in previous posts.

A couple of observations;
1. Auto-upgrade has been disabled on this system right after install, so no OS upgrades have happened behind my back.
2. No new software was recently added.
3. No other app complains about the registry being corrupted or changed.
4. I used a commercial registry analysis tool to check the registry. To do this, I totally removed all parts of Absolute T, cleaned out any further registry entries for it. Ran the scanner with positive results. Re-installed AT, re-ran the scan, and was , as others have noted, able to launch 1 session. After attempting to launch again, the error returned. Subsiquent checking of the registry detected NO changes or corruptions.

Without a more detailed scan to actually check the VALUES I am confident that the registry itself is not being corrupted. Further, based on this , it appears that the AT software itself is probably modifying the values, since it always will launch 1 time without issue, but the second time dies.

This version is 1.84. An older one to be sure, but the issue seems core to the software and not the OS.

Please dont get me wrong; the software has worked brilliantly for YEARS without issue; certainly we got our value out of it for the price. And paying for the upgrade is not what I consider out of line at this point. Brian, I hope you can pursue why this happened and ensure that vs. 3.x is not going to suffer the same fate.

Cheers...

Do we have to pay for this upgrade to version 3. We have version 2.0 currently installed and probably purchased it prior to 2001.
Any patch in sight for this bug..?

Brian,
Our operations manager states since this is a bug. We shouldn't be forced to pay for an upgrade to version 3., to fix the issue. Can you please reply so we can move on. This is a hassle to re-install Absolute Telnet every week for more than a dozen users.

Thanks for your help.

I get this issue, sometimes a few times a day. Having watched it for a while, I'm pretty sure that it only occurs when you get the 'checking for updates' dialog. Something that does corrupts something else that then causes AT to barf on the next load.

I've looked through the options and can't find anywhere to switch off update checks altogether. If someone can tell me how to do this then I would be very grateful as I'm 99% certain that would fix the problem of having to reinstall every day or so! I have v2.13 by the way, and apart from this problem am perfectly happy with it (apart from broken xmodem but I can live with that).

I'm not sure when the problem started for me, but November 2005 sounds right.

I'm using version 2.12. Interestingly, I just installed my original downloaded version on a new laptop, and it worked fine the first time I used the program. But the second time, the registry error occurred.

I run windows update, so I've installed various stuff from Microsoft recently. I probably was not running Absolute when it installed.

I'm running Win XP Professional version 2002 SP 2.

I tried to do the register-under-my-old-email-address fix, but it told me: "Someone else has already registered with that email address. Please try again. Use your back button."

I used your link to version 3.00 and edited it to version 2.12, downloaded a new copy, installed, unlocked with my license, and ran it several times successfully. This seems to be working for me.

My registration, by the way, was from New York (or Brooklyn), NY. My username is brw12.

Update on my efforts to get Absolute 2.12 working again --

Nope, didn't work. Just like others are reporting, after reinstall it worked fine -- for a little while. After that the registry error reoccurred.

Please, could a license for version 3.X be issued to all the people on this list who paid for 2.X but can't use it anymore?

Brian -

I am willing to pay $19.95 for an updated version (even though I don't need the updated features, just the non-bugginess), but what I worry is that if the same thing, or something else, happens with the program in another year, will I have to do the same again? I understand your reluctance to give away for free what you work hard for, but it would instill confidence in your product if you would provide a license upgrade to those of us experiencing the problem.

Thanks,

but what I worry is that if the same thing, or something else, happens with the program in another year, will I have to do the same again? I guess my track record will have to speak for itself. I've been doing this for the last 10 years, and this is the first time a bug has surface like this in an older piece of software. I apologize about this, but I do my best.

My premise is that most bugs will surface rather quickly, which gives me time to get out fixes within the first year you own your license. This works in most cases, and is manageable for me. I can't reasonably maintain separate source code for every version of Absolute I ever release. Bug fixes are always made in the new version and we move on.

For example, the new beta is shaping up nicely here:

http://www.celestialsoftware.net/telnet/beta_software.html

Some people will get this for free. Others will pay a modest upgrade fee. Is $19.95 really too much to ask? I put a lot of time and effort into this stuff.

Look, I don't mean to be rude here, but I'm a programmer as well, and this is the sort of thing that, while it falls squarely in a grey area, I would like to see my software vendor patch for me (or upgrade to a reasonable version - maybe not even the newest) for free.

This is not like the case I reported to you earlier, where (I suspect) the SSH library you are using is not playing nicely with SuSE's latest SSH daemon / SSL stack. That I would consider a "new bug".

This is more like a time bomb, and while I'm not for a minute insinuating that this was done deliberately, the net effect is that your program has ceased to be useful to registered customers.

I'm disappointed that this much time has elapsed with no action, but I hope you'll reconsider and fix this problem for your paying customers.

So, where are we regarding this problem? It sounds like a lot of paying customers have had this issue, and I think that we deserve an answer.
